3 Movement Ideas for Children with ADHD

Finding movement activities for children with ADHD is not a new one for the 21st-century special needs educators with online ADHD courses. It’s quite difficult for individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to pay attention. Also, the teacher feels quite challenging to make them fully attentive as ADHD children display trouble in concentrating, issues in following directions, impatience, and impulsivity, etc.

There are three types of ADHD –

  • Primarily inattentive
  • Primarily hyperactive/impulsive
  • And a combination of both

While teaching these types of kids or crafting an ADHD-friendly classroom, you just cannot tell them to sit still or stop playing or talking as within minutes they’ll be at it yet again. Therefore, you need to create some ground-breaking movement that can help them to relax, improve their focus and concentration as well.

Effective and creative movement that’ll help the ADHD children immensely:

Individual Sports

Consider implementing the individual sports. Here, by the individual sports we meant sports such as martial arts, wrestling, tennis, and swimming are better choices. We would also suggest to avoid doing it if a child with ADHD doesn’t like sports.

Please note, while you’re picking up martial arts programs, try to avoid those that include a lot of yelling. Yelling can be a little overwhelming for kids with ADHD. You may request a provisional session or ask to observe a class before signing up just to make sure that the dimensions and stride are a good match for the child.

Avoid Messy Surroundings

For a child with ADHD, try to avoid chaotic or messy kind of environment. Stick to small groups in practically controlled surroundings when you can. Keep in mind that a child with ADHD may lag in social prime of life. You may also deliver replacements to the standard classroom seat.

Some children with ADHD do better work if they’re being permitted to move. During literature or free reading or something like this, let students sit on pillows, in armchairs, or on the floor. Try to identify the breaking point. Provide the ADHD student prospects to exhibit his or her skills, talents and/or leadership aptitude. Give a pause before asking questions or ask the inattentive child a question to gain his or her attention.

Timing

Try to pay attention to timing as this is one of the most important aspects while teaching the ADHD children. The ADHD kids are already struggling a lot as they feel they are years behind their peers. They struggle with their mental health, lack of confidence and emotional breakdown. Give directions in simple, concrete terms and have the child complete one step before announcing the second step. Give them time to understand and focus. Also, try to make time to speak to the student independently.

You may also use a point system, tokens, stars, or other teaching methods to strengthen appropriate behaviours. Create different schedules, lists, and/or a homework assignment notebook to aid your ADHD student to keep organized as well as to upsurge the communication.

As a 21st-century special educator with ADHD course online, you need to understand the struggle of a student with ADHD and provide a well-ordered, safe and probable classroom environment. Also, try to establish a considerate and occupied relationship with the student’s parents. Try to learn about their child’s assets, weaknesses, interests and achievements as well outside of school.

We hope these strategies will surely help you in teaching and supporting a child with ADHD!
