20th October 2021

Certainly, any child will tell a lie from time to time but it has been seen that the kids with ADHD lie more. Have you ever thought of why? This problem is annoying for you as well as for your class. The more you know about why children with ADHD lie, the better you will be at aiding yourself and your learner.

It is extremely necessary for you to understand that when children with ADHD lie, they’re generally not trying to disobey or disrespect you. It’s just that they may be struggling with doing a system of tasks or with impulsivity. However, not all children with ADHD tell lies always. Some are impulsively honest.

Research and studies have shown that these lies are mostly about everyday things like responsibilities and work. ADHD children struggle with starting and planning out everyday jobs or they might lie about a slight mistake.

So, why would ADHD children lie?

How do you aid children with ADHD stop lying?

Is lying a part of ADHD?

Let us try to understand!

Reasons Children With ADHD Lie

The ADHD brain is different. Scholars studied the part of the brain called the caudate nucleus (a part of brain combines information across different parts). Scholars have found that this part of the brain is smaller in kids with ADHD.

While some other research found that children with ADHD don’t use the anterior cingulate cortex (helps focus attention). As a consequence, children who have ADHD have issues with executive functions.

Children with ADHD sometimes lie to avoid getting into distress. Furthermore, being impulsive is one more symptom of ADHD. Please note that the circumstances that lead to lying can be very dissimilar.

How To Help These Children Positively?

Before anything, even though lying is a troublesome behavior, avoid overreacting. As a skilled special educator, you can help learners to address this issue and change the cycle with simple strategies. Try to work to remove the embarrassment or shame of lying by showing that you understand the circumstances.

Support the learner to recognize and strategize for ways to manage the problem more effectively. If you know the answer, don’t ask. Avoid creating opportunities for your student to lie. When children can challenge tasks and do a good job, there’s less reason for them to lie, isn’t it?

Develop a proper plan to resolve the problem. It’s significant for teachers, families and medical professionals to work together to find the best treatment for each student. This might embrace medication and behavior therapy too. Deliver “brain breaks” throughout homework and to improve brain functioning.

You may also consider teaching your kid new skills or supervise homework more thoroughly. Try to establish consequences for telling lies. Another way to manage these children effectively is rewarding the honesty. Don’t shame your student if his/her lie is a symptom of ADHD.

As we have specified, this misbehavior is likely not intended, don’t label the child as a “Button-Pusher”. Try to identify the real issue, talk to your student along with the problem and find out a plan to solve that.

Last, but far from least, educate your student about ADHD along with the other learning challenges. Get yourself also trained with the ADHD courses for teachers as well. They point is to be constant with your strengthening of truth and trust, and always stay calm when dealing with lying ADHD children.
