5 Helpful Tips for Future Special Needs Educators in Performance Management of Their Students

It is never an easy task for a special needs educator to ensure that the performance of the students is improving, which he/she can do through a process of performance management. This is something which can be done through a number of ways that are meant to develop the overall teaching-learning procedure and make it an enriching experience for the teachers as well as the students, especially the young learners.

In the following lines, we will have a look at a few important tips which can be helpful in enhancing the performance of the students with special needs or ADHD and also cater to the development of the future educators as they look forward to make an impact in the field of special education.

As we know, the school experience can be challenging for students with ADHD. Students usually are identified only after consistently demonstrating a failure to understand or follow rules or to complete required tasks. Other common reasons for this identification include frequent classroom disruptions and poor academic performance. Parents and teachers can share information with one another if they work together to plan behavioural and academic strategies for the student. Parents can offer information about the child including the child's medical history, hobbies and interests, effective re-in forcers, and behaviour in other settings that may inform the decisions made by the teacher and other members of the IEP team. The teacher can keep parents informed about their child's progress, performance, and behaviour in school. If the child is taking medication, the teacher can offer feedback to parents regarding how the medication affects the student's performance and the duration of the medicine's effectiveness. This information also can be used to help medical professionals make more informed decisions about the child with ADHD.

A student with ADHD can present unique challenges in the classroom. Inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity can be the source of frustration, but there are ways teachers can help students with ADHD to improve the educational experience and control the symptoms of the disorder, which should be inculcated by the future educators, who are currently pursuing the comprehensive SEN courses for teachers. It is important for these future educators to be aware of coexisting conditions such as learning disabilities, as well as reinforcing the importance of classroom and instructional structure.

The following tips can be helpful for the future special needs educators when they start their venture in the sphere of special education.

1. Work on the most difficult concepts

It is important for the future educators to learn this trait for the proper development of performance of the students with special needs or ADHD. Working on the most difficult concepts early in the day helps to ease the way for the educators through the lessons and also makes it easier for the students to understand them in the right way, thus building a better atmosphere for the development of overall teaching-learning procedure.

2. Give directions to one assignment at a time

It is not easy for the students with dyslexia, dyscalculia or dysgraphia to understand all the instructions given by the teachers in the class at once. This is something which needs to be recognised by the learners of the SEN courses for teachers, who are expected to make a career in special education in the future. They have to understand and inculcate this trait in order to be patient with the students so that they can lead to the enhancement of their performance in the future.

3. Refrain from multitasking

This is a very important rule for the enhancement of performance of the students with special needs, which should be followed by the future educators when they start their career in the sphere of education. Students with special needs and ADHD struggle to collect all the information taught to them properly, so it is a must that the teachers refrain from multitasking or putting too much pressure of information over them during the classes so as to enhance their performance.

4. Vary the pace and type of activity to maximize the student's attention

Not every student with special needs is able to understand every instruction provided to them at the same pace. This is why it is important for the future special needs educator to vary the pace and alter the activities so as to maximise the attention of the students, thus helping in the development of the overall teaching-learning procedure.

5. Structure the student's environment

It is also very important for the educators to ensure that they are able to create and maintain an environment which caters to the management of the performance of the students with special needs and thus enable them to develop in the right manner. This is something which is extremely important for the learners of the SEN courses for teachers to understand and inculcate as they look forward to become able educators in the future.
